West Ham vs. Chelsea - 4 December 14:30

West Ham hit a real high one month ago when they defeated Liverpool 3-2, but since then things have not been so great for the London outfit. A 1-1 draw at home to Burnley was there most recent disappointment and after having had four consecutive wins in the EPL, they now find themselves winless in their last three. Moyes’ men now have 24 points and are still hanging on to a Top 4 spot, but after some massive wins against opposition like Liverpool, Spurs and Leicester they will be scratching their head and asking themselves how they managed to miss out on points against much easier opponents. West Ham haven’t had the best defense in the league this season and they haven’t kept clean sheets all too often, but this wasn’t a huge problem because their attack was really potent and averaging well over 2 goals per match up until their clash with Liverpool. However, now their attack is not performing as well and a lot of goalscoring opportunities have been missed against the likes of Wolves and Brighton. After scoring 23 goals in their first 11 matches of the season, they have now only scored two goals in their last three and it appears if the attack is slowing down. The Hammers will need to get this sorted right away if they are to keep their hopes of a dream season alive, but it’s not going to be easy to turn things around against the team with the best defense in the league. We have seen West Ham pull off massive results against big teams this season especially when playing at home and the possibility of them pulling off another big result should not be disregarded.

The Blues narrowly avoided being stunned at Stamford Bridge by Manchester United after Jorginho slotted a 69th minute penalty to cancel out Jordan Sancho’s goal earlier in the second half, allowing them to at least walk away from the clash with a point and keep their undefeated run intact. Chelsea bounced back from this slight setback on Wednesday when they defeated Watford 2-1 at Vicarage Round and they still lead the title race. They are one point ahead of Manchester City with 33 points and their undefeated run has been stretched to 12 matches across all leagues. Tuchel’s men have as many goals this season as they have points and are still the second highest scoring team in the league. They are averaging well over two goals per match and their clash with Manchester United was only the second time in their last six EPL clashes that they have scored less than two goals in a match with the other being against Burnley a month ago. It’s quite clear that their attack is still dangerous and I will be surprised if they score less than two goals on Saturday against the Hammers. As for their defense, it is starting to open up ever so slightly and the Blues seem to be conceding more often these days. However, it’s still the best in the league with only six goals conceded the entire season - half of which have come in their last five matches. Prior to their clash with Manchester United the Blues managed a 3-0 win away to Leicester, a 1-1 draw at home to Burnley and a 3-0 win away to Newcastle.

Chelsea narrowly leads the EPL head-to-head between the two teams with three wins, while West Ham have won two. The last time the teams met was at the Olympic stadium back in April where Chelsea were able to grab a 1-0 win thanks to Timo Werner. The last time West Ham managed to beat the Blues was back in July 2020 when the two sides played to a 3-2 thriller at the Olympic Stadium which saw the Hammers snatch victory in the 89th minute.

Prediction

This one is quite a difficult one to call. West Ham are in a bit of a slump at the moment and are having difficulty finding goals yet they have proved that they are quite a force to be reckoned with when playing at home and have also stunned some top teams this season. Chelsea’s attack have slowed down a bit in the last couple of games, but they still appear to be doing enough to win matches. Their defense is also starting to let in some goals here and there, but at the same time this is no indication that West Ham will be able to score against them considering the Hammers’ poor goalscoring form right now. It’s very possible that the match can end in a draw and since West Ham have also pulled some shock results I will back them on the double chance. Despite both teams not scoring a lot of goals at the moment I believe we should see at least three goals in this match since Chelsea are still averaging two goals per match and West Ham should score at least one goal. I also think there are some decent odds available on Mason Mount to score in the match. The youngster netted the first goal against Watford and looks to have ended his recent dry spell.
