Argentina vs. Australia, Saturday 2 October 09:05

Argentina and Australia kick-off the final round of Rugby Championship matches at the Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast. Australia look to pick up their fourth consecutive win, while Argentina will try to finish off their tournament with at least one win to their name.

Argentina

The misery just keeps continuing for Los Pumas and after last week they are still winless in this year’s Rugby Championship. The Argentines were never really in the match to begin with and despite starting off the second half with a try by Julian Montoya, they failed to build any momentum and went down 27-8. Argentina went into the match with an 11.5 point handicap, but didn’t even come close to covering.

Los Pumas are well on their way to becoming the team to finish with the worst ever points difference in the Rugby Championship and whatever the result is in this match they will be finishing the competition at the bottom of the table.

Earlier in the tournament they lost 36-13 and 39-0 to the All Blacks, as well as 32-12 and 29-10 to South Africa. In total they have conceded 163 points and they have only managed to score three tries. To make matters even worse Argentina will be without five of their players this week after they breached Covid 19 protocols. Things were already looking grim for Argentina going into the match, but this further disruption in the team has just about removed any chance they had of finishing off with a flurry.

Australia

The Wallabies look set to finish as runners-up in this year’s Rugby Championship after a comfortable win last week. Reece Hodge and Samu Karevi got the hosts off to a flying start with two tries in the opening 20 minutes, while Andrew Kellaway added a third try late in the second half. They easily covered the pre-match handicap and have now put together three consecutive wins.

Prior to last week the Aussies convincingly defeated the Springboks 30-17 and also narrowly beat them 28-16 the week before that. Despite a poor start to the tournament which saw them go down 57-22 and 38-21 to New Zealand, Australia have shown great improvement in the last few weeks and are a much better side compared to previous years.

Prediction

Australia have been given a massive 16.5 point head start in this match which is way too high for my liking. There is a very big chance that they can cover this considering the drama in the Argentinian camp, but it’s a little bit too risky. Considering the fast start by the Wallabies last week I am more inclined to go with the first half handicap which is -7.5. I don’t have a lot of confidence that this Pumas team will cross the whitewash in the match, let alone the first half, so I feel that this should be a safe bet. Andrew Kellaway has now scored a try in four of Australia’s last six matches and I fancy him scoring another on Saturday and it’s certainly worth a bet.
