English Premier League Weekend

The international break has come to an end and it’s time for the EPL season to resume. Here are a few matches this weekend that have caught my eye and offer some good options for a bet.

Leicester vs. Manchester City, Saturday 11 September 16:00

The Foxes head into this game placed ninth on the log with 6 points, just two spots down from Manchester City who have a slightly better goal difference.

So far this season Leicester have defeated Wolves 1-0 at home, lost 4-1 away to West Ham and beat Norwich 2-1 away.

Manchester City started off the season on the wrong foot with a 1-0 loss away to Spurs, but managed to bounce back with back-to-back 5-0 victories at home against Norwich and Arsenal.

Head-to-head in the last 4 fixtures at King Power Stadium it’s all square with both sides winning two matches a piece, which includes Leicester’s 1-0 win in Community Shield at the beginning of the season. Despite the stats depicting an even contest I am more inclined to side with the away team who have been finding the net more often. Leicester have also conceded five goals so far this season which does not hold well going into a clash with a high-scoring team like Manchester City.

Manchester United vs. Newcastle, Saturday 11 September 16:00

Manchester United are currently sitting in third place with 7 points after a 5-1 win at home against Leeds, a 1-1 draw away to Southampton and a 1-0 win away to Wolves.

Newcastle find themselves all the way at the other end of the table in 17th place with only one point. It’s been a struggle so far this season for the Magpies which saw them go down 4-2 at home to West Ham, lose 2-0 away to Aston Villa and draw 2-2 at home to Southampton.

In the last four matches at Old Trafford between the two sides it has been a clean sweep for the home team. Newcastle haven’t won a match at Old Trafford since 2015 and on paper that certainly doesn’t look set to change. They have let in eight goals already this season and if they don’t get their defense sorted for this clash it could be raining goals in Manchester.

Keep an eye on Cristiano Ronaldo who will be making his second debut for the Red Devils on Saturday. The 36 year old seems to be aging like a fine wine and it’s very possible that he could find the net for a dramatic return.

Chelsea vs. Aston Villa, 12 September 18:30

The Blues are placed fourth on the table with seven points thanks to a 3-0 home win over Crystal Palace, a 2-0 win at the Emirates and a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Chelsea may not be the top scoring team in the league at the moment, but with six goals scored in three matches and only one goal let in they are looking sharp.

Aston Villa sit in 11th place and despite relatively easy opposition up until now they find themselves with only four points after a 3-2 loss away to Watford, a 2-0 win at home to Newcastle and a 1-1 draw at home to Brentford. Saturday will be a real tough test for the Villans who have not won at Stamford Bridge since rejoining the Premier League in 2019.

The Villans did manage to beat Chelsea at Villa Park back in May and they have been finding the net away from home so far this season. Furthermore, they did manage to score in their last two outings to Stamford Bridge. However, it’s going to be tough to crack the Chelsea defense who have only conceded one goal in the form of a penalty against Liverpool. There’s a good chance that their streak of scoring away from home may just end on Saturday.
