Premier League Matchday 13 Preview

The international break is over, and we are in for months on undisturbed domestic football! Here`s what we`ve picked to watch in the Premier League this weekend!

Manchester City vs Liverpool

Undoubtedly the game to look forward to this weekend! Manchester City go into the game at the summit of the English topflight, with just 1 point separating them from the Merseyside Reds. The Citizens were sent off to the international break on the back of a captivating 4-4 draw against Chelsea and have now avoided a defeat in 6 consecutive games in all competitions. Considering the Citizens have not lost at home this season, Man City have won 15 of their 15 home games in the Premier League in 2023, and the overall total of wins in front of the home crowd is now at 23 games in all competitions – likely giving Liverpool a challenging trip.

With just 1 point away from the top, Liverpool head to Manchester on the back of a comfortable 3-0 victory over Brentford. However, their away form does them no favours as the Reds have won just 2 of their 6 away games in the Premier League this season and have not won in their last 3 road trips. Furthermore, Liverpool has not kept a clean sheet in the EPL on the road since May. The Citizens have won 4-1 and 3-2 respectively in their last 2 meetings against Liverpool and considering the Reds` vulnerabilities on the road we expect them to prevail again. Therefore, we expect both teams to score, but Manchester City to win.

Newcastle United vs Chelsea

Newcastle are under pressure to get back to winning ways having lost 2 consecutive games against Dortmund and Bournemouth. Howe`s unbeaten run of 7 league games came to a shocking end against Bournemouth, although their squad is ridden with injuries. Still, the Magpies enjoy welcoming a London opposition to St. James` Park considering they`ve beaten Brentford, Crystal Palace, and Arsenal in their last 4 home fixtures and have secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Chelsea in their last game against the Blues, although Chelsea have won 3 of the last 5 games at St. James` Park.

Chelsea continued their bottom-half of the table climb having held Man City to a surprising 4-4 draw. Pochettino’s outfit have shown great signs of improvement – having lost just 1 of their last 8 games across all competitions and will be hungry to continue building consistency after a poor start to the season. They will also be confident having won 3 consecutive games on the road in the Premier League, however, St. James` Park has been fortified in the Premier League this season, with the Magpies losing just 1 of their 6 home games and conceding merely 3 goals. Because Newcastle are shaky and Chelsea are finding their form, it is difficult to pick a clear winner, and a draw should not be ruled out. We expect under 2.5 goals and both teams to score.

Everton vs Manchester United

The Toffees will either be furious or down-and-out following a 10-point deduction. Everton just began to pick up momentum, having gone 4 games without a defeat in all competitions, although still fighting in the bottom half of the table. Now the Toffees find themselves in a relegation battle with just 4 points – 2 away from escape. To their disadvantage, their form in front of the home fans has been poor – having won just 1 of their 6 home games this season and losing 4. Additionally, they have only won 1 of their last 5 home games against the visitors in all competitions.

Manchester United headed into the international break on the back of a narrow 1-0 victory against Luton. To many fans` surprise, considering the Devils` chaotic start to the season, they are just 4 points away from top 5 and have won 4 of their last 5 Premier League games, now considered to be the most point any team picked up from the last 5, hence the team “in form”. Ten Hag`s side have won 3 consecutive games on the road in the top flight, having started the season with 2 consecutive away losses. Their last trip to Everton ended in a 2-1 victory and considering Everton`s likely moral state and United`s slowly developing form, we don`t expect the outcome to change. United have been grinding out narrow victories as of late, and we expect the same here. Therefore, we expect Manchester United to win, but under 2.5 goals.
